Elisa Arimany at Montserrat’s Museum

Elisa Arimany al Museu de Montserrat

Montserrat’s Museum presents a retrospective look at the work of sculptor Elisa Arimany (Sant Vicenç de Castellet (Barcelona), 1946). The Strength of an Idea, as it has been titled, is curated by Francesc Miralles, and shows 18 works from the artist’s personal collection.  They portray the essence of her sculptural work: some works of the series Pressures, along with pieces of the series Cathedrals, exemplify the humanism that emanates from all her work: the Opression and the freedom together with the feeling of spirituality that moves mankind’s experience. Technically, the contraposition of materials and the straight line are a constant in all her production.

Self-taught, Elisa Arimany started her artistic career as a ceramist, and soon incorporated other materials such as stone, iron and handmade paper. She combines small and medium size sculptures with monumental pieces in the public space. Her creations are actually present in cities and museums worldwide –she has exhibited in many cities in Europe and the United States, and has many public sculptures-. Her sculpture is essentially abstract, and characterized by the constant search for a deep humanism that challenges the great questions of human being, using geometric forms full of symbolism. Arimany combines the rotundness of the stone with the cold of the iron and the delicate texture of the ceramics. This selection shows the resulting mixture of materials and the sensitivity of the artist.
