Nature and origin of life according to Waltraud Maczassek
The German artist Waltraud Maczassek, who settled down in Barcelona and resides now in Penedès area, shows the exhibition Parallel Universes –at Montserrat’s Museum’s Sala Pere Daura until June 9th – a collection of thirty mixed-technique works –sculpture / acrylic- through cuttings carved with her fingers, leaving traces. Waltraud Maczassek’s work, mostly pictorial, draws its inspiration from nature to depict interior landscapes, and is closely aligned with lyrical abstraction. Nature and, more specifically, the origins of life, are the basis of the present exhibition in Montserrat.
In her paintings, Maczassek re-interpretes cells and molecules, and questions herself about the most primitive vital shapes, while embracing the landscapes of the country that has welcomed her. They are not only terrestrial shapes –mostly starring vineyards and wine-, but also marine shapes. In this sense she searches the communion between mankind and nature, since it is usually about lived, breathed, trodden landscapes with a tinge of phantasmagoria.
The works displayed in Parallel Universes, curated by José Corredor-Matheos, are diptychs and triptychs, and bigger pieces. The majority of them were made in 2012 and 2013, and its connecting thread is nature and creation.
